• Now in its second edition, the book was updated in 2015 to reflect the latest trends in rescue and equipment.
• After many years, a book dealing with prevention and rescue on rivers has finally been published. It is called Safe on Running Water and is primarily intended as a teaching script for the Water Tourism Instructor course at the accredited Water Rescue School. It covers material that should be known by anyone who wants to go hiking and whitewater rafting or who is organizing a float trip for a group of friends or children. The script, which contains 104 A4 pages together with hundreds of pictures and photographs, is a comprehensive work on river safety. It is mainly aimed at paddlers who are new to rescue or are intermediate. As well as equipment, the main topics include rescue equipment, self-rescue, rescuing others and materials using different types of craft or equipment, first aid, knotting, identifying a dangerous weir, choosing a suitable river, group abseiling and many other chapters and practical advice. Complete new features include a chapter on psychology for leaders, stress and stressful situations. Individual chapters are supplemented with real-life stories to make the reader aware of the risks of underestimating certain situations.
• The script should appeal to paddlers who can paddle and handle a boat. It does not teach paddling or basic strokes, but rather builds on and develops this knowledge. We are also planning a follow-up to this book, with specific elements of rescue to be covered in separate publications. Rescuing from the roll is already on sale, while others are in the pipeline - wedging and soaking, turning an overturned raft and other wild water rescue techniques.
• Such a comprehensive work on boating safety and prevention has not yet been published in the Czech Republic. If you are at least a little bit serious about riding on rivers, it should definitely not be missing in your library.
